Great Britain, 18 – 28 November 2005

Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma. former Indian Senator, newspaper editor, arid currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois made a lightning but penetrating tour of Great Britain from 12 to 28 November. He has been associated with the International Communications Forum since its early days.

Accompanied by his wife, Usha, he began the journey with a three day visit to Scotland in the course of which he was invited to the offices of the famous Scottish daily newspaper, The Scotsman, where he received his early training in journalism, nearly a half century ago. He was received by Bill Jamieson, Executive Editor and George Kerevan, senior executives of the paper, together with Magnus Linklater, a former editor and today a columnist for The Times and Scotland on Sunday. He was presented with a photograph of himself whilst serving his apprenticeship with the paper and given a tour of the new office buildings. The next day The Scotsman gave a full page to his visit with the heading of ‘Why Gandhi can still help us give peace a chance’.

Following Glasgow and Edinburgh he journeyed south via speaking engagements in Liverpool, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull and Oxford, where he addressed a packed meeting of the Oxford Union Society, and on to London and, finally, Canterbury.

At a luncheon given in his honour by the London Press Club on 23 November 2005 in the beautiful premises of the Foreign Press Association, Professor Gandhi spoke on ‘The War on Terrorism and the Gandhian Ethic’. Click here for a full account of the event.
