July 2007

Two members of the ICF’s U.S. Chapter received key appointments recently. Alan Kania of Denver, secretary-treasurer, was appointed chairman of the International Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists by SPJ National President Chris Tatum of the Denver Post. The committee engages in a wide range of media issues globally.

Bob Webb, an ICF Vice President and chair of its U.S. chapter, was installed as president of the Washington, D.C. Pro Chapter of SPJ, the nation's third largest, at its annual media star-studded Dateline Awards banquet June 12 at the National Press Club. The chapter will host SPJ's 2007 National Convention October 4-7 in Washington. (ICF Founder-President Bill Porter conducted an ICF workshop at SPJ's 1998 convention in Los Angeles).

That same week Webb received a "Trust Builder" award from Initiatives of Change at its National Forum in Dayton, Ohio on "Building Trust in America." The award read, in part, "Soon after he encountered the ideas of IofC as a young journalist from Mississippi, he apologized to an African he met for his racist attitudes and behavior and sought to bring a new spirit to this nation through the articles and editorials he wrote in his long career with several papers, including the Cincinnati Enquirer."
